At Martinmas, the community gathers around children and help them “make” their own lantern (conscience). They then walk in darkness for the first time, only following their lantern light and without the proximity of adults, who will watch from a distance.
We will be making lanterns mostly from paper but any idea and material is welcome, especially if recycled. Even if you won’t make it to the walk, you can have fun making a lantern for children who may join in at the last minute.
We will supply materials but you’re welcome to bring your own, especially if recycled. Card, cloth, jars, rope, tissue paper, glue, tape, pins, yarn, plastic glass and bottles and more! Everybody’s welcome no matter the age, bring a friend!

Martinmas Lantern Walk

A celebration of light and darkness inspired by the story of St Martin, also echoing ancient traditions such as Samhain and All Hallows Eve, marking the passage into the darkest season of the year until solstice. #martinmas #familyfun #rudolfsteiner #waldorfeducation #cliftonville #community

At Martinmas, the community gathers around children and help them “make” their own guiding lantern (conscience). They then walk in darkness for the first time, only following their lantern light and without the proximity of adults,

who will be watching from a distance. We will meet up at 101 Social and walk down Northdown Road to Dane Park, singing traditional Martinmas tunes (see link) and holding our lanterns.

Adults will stop at the entrance of the park and let the children briefly explore it in darkness only following the light of their lanterns. We will then all head back to and regroup at 101 for tea, cake and hot chocolate and mulled wine for adults.

Another Idol Has Displaced Me

“It matters little,’ she said, softly.” […] “What Idol has displaced you?” he rejoined. “A golden one.” —Charles Dickens An obscure, steampunk immersive installation by Olga Jusianec-Murphy seamed up along quotes from Stave 2 of A Christmas Carol.”Has consumerism displaced love? Where do the things you buy go?
Left to die alone before we can become truly theirs and they truly ours, used long enough to become someone’s memory.””London produces.Like a tireless steam factory, it pumps out, burns and dumps goods as they become no longer adequate, out of fashion, ‘ungoods’. The fruits of urban skips and abandoned places are left there to die alone. Their memory obliterated, their dignity as objects stripped away. Once ‘goods’, now unhygienic, forgotten stuff. Mess, dirt. But still they live and wonder why we even made them only to throw them away so soon, before we could become theirs and they ours. Used long enough to become someone’s memory. Given space and vision, they gather to watch us, maybe talk to us, their former users. Lend them your ears, open your eyes, rethink stuff.”* Literary reference: When the Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge a meeting he had as a young man with his fiancee, Belle, she is in the process of breaking off their engagement. She says that “another idol has displaced me,” and elaborates, “a golden one.” As she notes a few lines later, “the master-passion, Gain, engrosses you.” This is the literal way of saying that gold is Scrooge’s idol. One could also consider the “golden idol” reference as a symbol or metaphor. It compares Scrooge’s devotion to making money to a religious devotee’s worship of a sacred statue or icon. The idol symbolises what Scrooge has set his primary affections on, namely money. Scrooge has allowed his love of money to overtake his heart, and that has changed him from the good man he once was.##101artshows #olgajusianecmurphy #steampunk #upcycling #charlesdickens #DIY #punkart #consumerism #reuse #waste #gifteconomy #sculpture #lightprojectionart #teknosound #platforma5 #margatenow #margatefilmfestival

Getting High with the Most High: Drugs in the BibleThy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices” – Song of Songs 4Nearly all of the plants listed here in the Song of Songs contain known psychoactive compounds, and the combination of some of them into the holy massage oil described in Exodus reveals that the ancient Hebrews were adept at working with synergies and enzyme-inhibition to trigger powerful psychedelic experiences. In this talk, historian Danny Nemu reveals the presence of several other mind-bending preparations in the bible. These include temple incense containing opioid-receptor and GABA-receptor agonists, dopamine boosters and other psychoactive chemicals. Lastly Danny will discuss the enigma of manna and the collective synaesthetic vision at Mount Sinai. Nemu will be giving out doses of the sacraments with messianic abandon.Danny NemuDanny is the author of two of the Psychedelic Press’ bestsellers – Science Revealed and Neuro-Apocalypse. He is an expert on the Bible, mining its historic, poetic and linguistic layers for all kinds of surprising gems, including sophisticated preparations of drug such as cannabis and analogues of both MDMA and LSD. He delivers talks widely and engagingly, sometimes even hotboxing the auditorium with the psychocative incenses of Exodus to recreate the tabernacle!

Kundalini Meditation at 101Kundalini meditation is a dynamic, non-religious form of meditation invented by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, also known as Osho, in 1975, with original music by German former Krautrock legend and later new age composer Georg Deuter. It is done preferably in the late afternoon as it clears away the tensions that both the body and the mind tend to accumulate during the day. Benefits of regular Kundalini meditation include the drastic reduction of any unneeded activity of the mind (mind defrag), a pleasant sense of slowing of time thanks to its soothing effect on the sympathetic nervous system, whose function is to activate the fight-or-flight response in stressful situations. It can also help release old habits and addictions and improve irregular blood pressure and sleeping patterns.#meditation #community
